We have created the WhizScreen app for all gadgets fans but specifically for those who like home automation. If you are part of this group we assume that you already have at least one Alexa device at home and probably some kind of “smart” hub, our bet is that you own a Samsung SmartThings hub if you like controlling different sensors or/and the Logitech Harmony hub if you like home cinema and such. You can buy different types of smart sensors and a variety of cool devices that are designed for your smart home, however there is nothing out there that can be used as a smart screen.
What is a smart screen? Think about it as a screen that is always on and is always ready to provide you with useful information like the time, the news etc. However as its name suggests this screen is not only a screen but it is also “smart” so you can interact with it using the different gadgets you already own.
You can use Alexa to talk to your screen, for example you can use WhizScreen in the living room as a pictures frame and ask Alexa to pause so pictures will stop rotating, you can than ask Alexa to “unlike” a picture that you don’t want to see anymore on your screen. And this is only an example, WhizScreen can do many other cool things with Alexa.
Your WhizScreen also has an API so you can create automation tasks that work with other smart devices in your home. For example, you can use IFTTT and create a rule so every time you receive an email a notification will be displayed on all WhizScreens in your house.
WhizScreen also has an internal timer, you can use this built-in timer to trigger actions, a simple example is using it as a smart alarm clock. Use WhizSCreen in your bedroom and set it to wake you up every morning to your favorite YouTube clip or a web site (maybe the latest weather report?).
In addition to the above WhizScreen can work with:
- Dropbox – when used as a picture frame, pictures are viewed directly from your Dropbox account so you can add pictures to your Dropbox account and those will be automatically shown on your screen.
- Philips Hue lights – WhizScreen background color will change to match the color of your Philips Hue light.
- Google Calendar – WhizScreen can show you your next event and can notify you (by showing a message on your screen) when an event starts. Use it with Alexa to set reminders to yourself. No more looking for a pen and a paper (or your iPhone) to write those reminders.
But this is not all, we have released another app – the WhizScreen Control app (available both in the Apple Store and Google Play Store). You can use this app to control your screen from anywhere in the world. Use the app to send a message that will be displayed on your screen in case you want to draw the attention of somebody in your home. It can be a family member that set her phone to silence mode (so you cannot text or call her) or it can be an “uninvited” visitor that your Nest camera or SmartThing sensor just detected. The possibilities are endless. You can also use the WhizScreen control app to “send” a websites to your WhizScreen – want to cook and need a recipe? Use the WhizScreen control app to find a website with your favorite recipe and “send” it to your WhizScreen in the kitchen. The recipe website will be displayed on your kitchen screen and stay always on.
